Learning the basics of DIY may seem intimidating, but it’s more than possible. We’ve gathered some good tools that will get you started with carpet cleaning.
Carpet cleaning can be a welcome way to energize a room, but while the effort is worthwhile, the payback is underwhelming. We’ve compiled some tips for tackling carpets and rugs, and quickly getting the job done.
1. Start with the easiest thing
It’s usually easiest to get the dirtiest pile first. As you clean, vacuum under the carpet, and then roll it up tightly and drag it to the back of the room. Rinse thoroughly, then put the wet pile in the dryer for 20 to 30 minutes, to give it a gentle clean. Repeat with the next pile.
2. Brighten the room
Once you have a pile of clean carpets, you can add a few key things to brighten up a dull room.
First, introduce some color. Consider adding color in bold red, green or blue. Or paint on a rug in some light color.

3. Icy cold water
If you choose to clean your carpets in the hot sun of summer, try spreading warm, icy water to kill any bacteria or parasites that may have been there all along.
4. Installing new hardware
If you want to upgrade your carpeting, you have options. First, you can skip the vacuum and put away the rolls of carpet under the sink, where you can then make a run through the room to dump the rolls out. You can do this by plugging a non-mechanical vacuum cleaner into your wall outlet, and then dump out the carpets down the drain. Alternatively, you can just purchase a mechanical vacuum cleaner and use it to empty and lay down the carpets in your home. If you are doing the latter, check out our guide to how to buy and install your own vacuum.
5. Put away the rolls
Even though you’ve succeeded in getting the dirty dirt under the carpet out, put the rolls away and the floor cleaner back in the garbage can where you put them. You still don’t want piles of dirty carpets on your floor.
